Tenth Anniversary and NES Community Development

TENTH ANNIVERSARY AND DEVELOPMENT OF NES COMMUNITY (2002-2008)

In 2002 NES turned 10 years old. Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated the School on this event. In honor of the 10th anniversary, NES held a Research Conference "Economic Science and the Economy of the Transition Period".

In 2003 NES established named professorships. Stanislav Anatolyev has been named Access Industries Professor of Economics and NES Vice-Rector Sergei Guriev became Human Capital Foundation Professor of Economics. It's a common practice worldwide when the research activity of a professor or department is sponsored not by the university itself, but by an external company or individual. Named professorships established by Russian companies allow NES to maintain tenured and tenure-track professors who have received modern economic education at the world's best universities.

In 2004 Sergei Guriev was appointed Rector of NES. First Rector Valery Makarov took the post of NES President. Sergei Guriev joined NES in 1998, 6 years after the School was founded, and in different years he was Lecturer, Professor and Vice-Rector for Strategic Development.

«I have always been asked – at least one thousand times! – why NES has different names in English and Russian (the Russian name is RESch, literally “Russian Economic School”). Barry Ickes, one of the School’s founders, has always joked that the School was so unique that we had to name it twice. The rational explanation is that in 1992, outside of Russia “Russian Economic School” would be associated with Soviet rather than with modern economics. Naming the School the “New Economic School” sent a completely clear signal that NES would be new, modern, different from the past. And within Russia, “Russian Economic School” made perfect sense – as NES’s mission was (and still is) to built a Russian economics profession and to be the leading Russian economics institution. But I am sure that part of the explanation is related to the fact that “nes” is Hebrew for "miracle"".

Since 2005 an annual magazine about NES community NES Alumni Magazine has been published. It is delivered by subscription worldwide. Another periodical published by the School is NES Paper which can be authored by any member of the NES community, issued since 2004.

In 2006 NES received state accreditation, and from this moment on, all graduates of "Master of Arts in Economics Program" receive a state-issued diploma.

In 2007 "Master in Finance" program supported by Morgan Stanley was opened. The program is aimed to train middle- and senior-level specialists working in the financial sector.

Also, in 2007 NES Endowment Foundation was established. The Foundation accumulates contributions and donations from various sources. The funds are used to finance named professorships, conduct research, and ensure the long-term financial stability and independence of the School.

In 2008 NES Career Development and Leadership Center (CDLC) was established. The Center provides a weekly newsletter of current vacancies, coordinates the employment of students and helps them expand career opportunities.
