Moving to Our Own Campus and NES 30th Anniversary (2020-2022)

MOVING TO OUR OWN CAMPUS AND NES 30th ANNIVERSARY (2020-2022)

In 2020, NES worked with  the European University at St. Petersburg, the Moscow Higher School of Social and Economic Sciences, and the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) to establish the New University League. This association aims to develop new forms of education, introduce educational innovations and conduct cross-disciplinary research at the intersection of technical, natural and social sciences.

In December 2020, NES launched the "Economics out Loud" podcast. It is a popular science project in which NES professors and graduates, as well as guest experts, talk about economics and finance and their impact on people’s lives in the present moment. Podcast episodes are released weekly on Tuesdays.

In the 2021/22 academic year, NES established the Grigory Kosenok and Andrei Bremzen Memorial Fund in honor of the two NES professors who passed away in the summer of 2021. This fund provides scholarships to support students of the NES and HSE Joint Bachelor's Program in Economics who are facing financial hardships.

In the fall of 2021, NES moved to its own campus on the territory of the Skolkovo Innovation Center. The new campus of the school provides a comfortable and congenial environment for students to study and for professors and staff to work.

In January 2022, NES for the first time received a grant from the Presidential Grants Fund for the development of the popular science website GURU,  which had been launched in September 2021.

In September 2022, two NES graduates became the co-directors of the NES and HSE Joint Bachelor's Program in Economics: NES Professor Irina Denisova and HSE Professor Sergey Stepanov.

In April 2022, NES graduate Oleg Itshoki (MAE '04) received the John Bates Clark Medal, which honors economists under the age of 40,  from the American Economic Association (AEA). The AEA website notes that Oleg Itshoki has made fundamental contributions to both international finance and international trade, and  he has upended long-standing explanations, offering new interpretations of important phenomena in the international economy.

In July 2022, the NES Board of Directors approved Anton Suvorov as the School’s new rector. He is a NES graduate (MAE '99) and previously worked as a co-director of the NES and HSE Joint Bachelor's Program in Economics. Professor Suvorov took up his duties in September 2022, becoming the sixth NES rector and the second consecutive one to represent the School’s alumni. The previous rector Ruben Enikolopov (MAE ’02), who held the position since 2018, remains on the NES Board of Directors and continues to work as the School's Academic Director.

In October 2022, Sber and NES announced the launch of a program to train world-class specialists in the field of wealth management. In 2023, the first group of students started studying at the new flagship program Masters in Wealth Management (MWM), based on the best national and international professional training practices in the field of private capital management. The program was designed with the participation of leading experts in the wealth management industry.

In October 2022, NES took another important step in the implementation of the development strategy that it has been working toward throughout its 30-year history. The School announced enrollment for its first postgraduate course. The first students started studying and working on their PhD theses in September 2023. NES Professor Ozgur Evren became the director of the program.

In December 2022, NES celebrated its 30th anniversary with a series of special events. Most of them commemorated Gur Ofer, one of NES’s founders, who passed away in November 2022. The main events were the NES Academic Conference, the NES popular science days, the NES alumni night and a series of alumni meetings around the world, as well as the opening of the NES Faces exhibition.
