Biography

Professor of Economics and President of the New Economic School; co-director of the China-Russia Eurasian Studies Center (CREC), Academic Director of the Center for the Study of Diversity and Social Interactions at NES; Professor Emeritus at the Southern Methodist University. He is a member of the Global Development Network (GDN), corresponding member of the Saxony Academy of Science (Germany) and Adjunct Professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Hong Kong, China).

In 1979 he got a PhD degree in Mathematical Economics from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He earned his master’s degree in mathematics from the Lomonosov Moscow State University in 1971 (sum cum laude). 

His main research interests are diversity, game theory and political economy, public economics and economy of the former USSR, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and his teaching experience includes political economy, microeconomic theory, welfare economics, industrial organization, microfoundations of macroeconomics, principles of economics, price theory, public choice, public economics, game theory, social choice, advanced economic analysis, mathematical analysis for economists, operations research.

He has been a lecturer, visiting scholar, senior lecturer,professor or visiting professor at departments of economics of universities in Europe, Central and South-Eastern Asia and North America. 

He is the author of over 150 articles published in the top journals in economics and political science (including Econometrica, Review of Economic Studies, American Political Science Review, Journal of Economic Theory, Journal of Public Economics) and related mainly to economic theory, economics of the public sector, political economy and game theory. His work has won various international scientific awards, including the Humboldt Research Prize for Outstanding Foreign Scientists (2002).
