Admissions Criteria

Applicants to NES graduate programs must:

  • have obtained a Bachelor’s degree. Holders of foreign diplomas must get their diplomas apostilled or otherwise legalized. Contact your university’s registrar office for directions on how to complete this process.
  • pass exams in the following subjects:
    • Mathematics, by taking either the entrance exam at NES or the GRE subject test in math (for all graduate programs) or the quantitative section of GRE general/GMAT (for applied programs MAEE/MSEE and MAF/MSF)
    • English, by taking either the entrance exam at NES or the TOEFL, IELTS, CAE, CPA, or BEC H (see below exceptions for native speakers and holders of degrees from English-language institutions)

Application Instructions:

  1. All applicants must fill out an online application:
  • Register online to get a login ID and password (link forthcoming)
  • Complete the on-line application form
  • Upload scans of the following documents:
    • Diploma of higher education and transcript  (possible options):
      • of the Russian Federation
      • of a foreign country recognized in Russia to be equivalent to the state diploma of higher education of the Russian Federation
      • of a foreign country that has been apostilled or otherwise legalized; contact your university’s registrar for details
      • Notarized translation into Russian of the aforementioned foreign diploma of higher education and transcript
      • Certificate of recognition (nostrification) of a foreign diploma of higher education, if required by the Russian the legislation – click here for information on this process (Note: If your university is not on this list, you will need to nostrify your diploma; please, keep in mind that nostrification can take as long as 3-4 months)
      • Passport pages with a photo

 2. Arrange for the results of required standardized tests (see below) to be sent by testing agencies to the NES Admission Committee by July 20, 2017.

 3. You will be notified of the Admissions Committee’s decision on your application by August 2. If you are accepted into the program, the committee will request that you send the original hard copies of certain documents to secure your enrollment. The committee will specify which documents are required, as they depend on your diploma. In most cases, this will be an apostilled or nostrified Bachelor's degree diploma, notarized diploma translation, Bachelor's degree transcript, and a copy of your passport. You are not required to send your original passport.

Entrance Exams & Required Standardized Tests

Official test scores must be received directly from testing agencies before admitted candidates can be enrollment. Applicants have the right to submit several test scores and count their best one.

Other exam results are automatically canceled if the applicant takes NES’s own entrance exams. Students must decide whether they want to take the NES entrance exam or submit the results of the GRE/GMAT/TOEFL/etc. by July 20, 2017.

 

Mathematics: GRE Subject Test in Mathematics

The GRE institution code for NES is 1928. GRE certificates are valid for 5 years. GRE scores are converted into NES test scores according to the following scale:

Applicants who know Russian have the additional option of taking the NES math entrance exam in Moscow, Novosibirsk, or St. Petersburg on July  24 - 28, 2017. This exam is conducted as a Russian-language written in math Sample tests can be found hereThe exam lasts 3 hours for MAE and 1.5 hours for applied programs. The maximum score for the exam is 12 points. Test results of 2 points or below are considered unsatisfactory for admission.

English: TOEFL/IELTS/CAE/CPA/BEC H

If your first language is not English or if the language of instruction of your previous degree is not English, we ask you to provide evidence of your command of English. 

 Applicants holding one of the following official certificates:

  • TOEFL IBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language, Internet-based Testing)
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System, Academic)
  • CAE (Certificate in Advanced English)
  • CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English)
  • BEC H (Business English Certificates Higher)

may count their results as a grade for the NES English exam according the following 5-10 point scale:

TOEFL IBT certificates with the results lower than 65 or IELTS certificates lower than 5.5 are considered unsatisfactory for admission. The NES institution code for the TOEFL is 0427. Those taking the IELTS must provide the testing agency with the aforementioned postal address when registering for the exam, and test results will be sent to NES automatically. Test results from the TOEFL or IELTS taken later than July 1, 2017 will not be accepted. TOEFL and IELTS results are valid for 2 years.

Application Deadlines

  • The application deadline for all degree-seeking MAE students is August 4, 2017.
  • Original hard copies of standardized test results from testing agencies must be received by August 4, 2017.
  • Original hard copies of documents requested by the Admission Committee must be received by August 7, 2017. Note: documents can take up to two months to get to Russia from abroad if you do not use an express postal service.
