Information about the School

New Economic School (NES) - a unique higher education and research institute established in 1992.

The mission of the New Economic School - modern economic education and research for the Russian society, business and government.

The quality of education at NES relies mainly on a strong faculty of Russian and foreign professors with PhD in economics and finance from the world’s leading Universities, and a strong body of students. NES degree is highly regarded in Russia and abroad. NES graduates build careers in prestigious international and Russian companies; continue their studies towards PhD or MBA degrees at leading universities around the world.

The main scope of NES activities is: education, research, corporate training, development of economic education in Russia and the CIS countries.

Research

There are several research centers at NES: a Center for Demographic Research (CDR), which was created in 2011, and a Research Laboratory of Social Relationships and Diversity of Society (CSDSI), established in 2013 in cooperation with the head researcher, professor Shlomo Weber, recipient of a significant grant from the Russian government.

NES professors represent the leading edge of the Russian economic science in the world’s community of economists, participate in the leading international conferences, and publish research papers in the most recognized international journals in economics, including: Econometrica, American Economic Review, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Review of Economic Studies, Journal of Economic Perspectives , Journal of Economic Literature, Journal of European Economic Association, Journal of Finance, Journal of Business, American Political Science Review.

Data Center

At the end of 2015, the Databanks Center under the direction of Professor Evgeny Yakovlev was created at NES. The center is engaged in advanced applied research of Big Data.

The regular faculty of NES comprises of 39 economists with PhDs in economics and finance from the leading universities of the world, such as: Harvard, MIT, Columbia, NYU, LBS, Wisconsin-Madison, Northwestern University, and others.

  • Master of Arts in Finance (MAF) - applied magistrate (2 years).
  • Master of Science in Finance (MSF) - professional retraining program (1 year).

Economics of Energy and Natural Resources (Masters in Energy Economics, EE)

  • Master of Arts in Energy Economics (MAEE) - applied magistrate (2 years).
  • Master of Science in Energy Economics (MSEE) - professional retraining program (1 year).

Masters in Finance, MiF

Corporate training

There are corporate training programs developed at NES.  In 2011 NES, together with the business school INSEAD created a unique product on the Russian market - a Russian analogue of the MBA program of international level. This program is designed for top 500 managers of Sberbank and includes regular classroom sessions, distance learning and independent fieldwork.

NES in rankings

  • NES takes 2nd place in the Top 25% Institutions in Russia RePEc.
  • Included in the Top 25% European Economics Departments RePEc.
  • According to the rating SSRN (Social Science Research Network), - among the top 50 best economics faculties in the world.
  • 1st place in the category "Universities of the scope of management (economics, finance, management)" by "Rating demand for higher education institutions in Russia-2016", prepared by the project "Social Navigator" MIA "Russia today" with the participation of the Center for the study of the labor market.
  • 12th place in the top 50 universities in the scope of "economic and governance areas" of objective reputation rating by "Expert RA".

Graduates

Today there are more than 1500 NES graduates. About 75% - work in the business, mainly in companies - the leaders of the Russian and international financial and real sector; 20% - chose an academic career at MIT, Stanford, Yale, Columbia, Penn State, NYU, LSE; 5% - are working in the public sector.

Development of economic education in Russia and CIS

NES trains highly qualified specialists for the Russian labor market and plays an important role in the development of economic education in Russia. NES professors also teach at the Moscow State University, RANHiGS, HSE, MISA and others.

Every year, winter and summer schools in different cities of Russia are conducted for teachers and researchers from the regions. The task of such schools - support of young scientists and their introduction into the global scientific environment. Well-known foreign economists are invited to participate in such workshops. Last winter school took place on the island of Russkii, where the campus of Far Eastern Federal University is located.

Public lectures

NES conducts about 20 public lectures a year. Among the partners of the lecture cycles - Lecture Hall of the Polytechnical Museum, the Media Institute, "Arrow" Architecture and Design, Gaidar Foundation, and others.

NES professors regularly make media appearances, write columns in the leading business media (RBK, Vedomosti, Kommersant, Forbes, Slon.ru, Rain, etc.). Topics they cover very often make the headlines in the media: Ruble's exchange rate, Central Bank’s policy, the economic crisis, macroeconomics, financial politics, energy economics, alternative energy economics, social economics, demographics, consumer behavior, import substitution, the impact of diversity on economic development.
