World Bank report


September 15, New Economic School presented World Bank report ‘’Golden & Silver Century of Ageing: population ageing in Russia, Europe and Central Asia. Two World Bank Reports.’’ Shlomo Weber, Provost of NES started the report with welcoming speech and noted great importance of this event for NES. First, the issue of ageing was analyzed on the example of Russia. Later, during the second part of the report, some European and Central Asia’s regions were also made emphasis on. Arup Banerji, World Bank Global Director for Social Protection & Labor, noted particular relevance of the issue not only for Russia but for the world community on the whole. Among the speakers there were Birgit Hansl, World Bank Head Economist, Victoria Levin, World Bank Economist, Maurizio Bussolo, World Bank Lead Economist and Emily Sinnott, World Bank Senior Economist. Victoria Levin reported that Russia’s population had aged significantly over the last 50 years, and this process would continue till 2050. Reduction of labor resources and growth of demographic load rate also leads to significant socio-economic problems. However, it was highlighted repeatedly that population ageing was not such a disaster. It is not only possible but strongly necessary to struggle with, adjusting state policy and behavior of people. The World Bank offered a special Program on Healthy and Active Ageing Support. The program will suppose encouragement of level of fertility and net migration. Irina Denisova, NES Professor of Economics, Elena Grishina (RANEPA), Eugeny Andreev, Leading NES Demographic Researcher, took part in the final discussions. The discussants touched issues of the retirement age increase and the attitude of Russians to their health and employers’ policy.
