During its ten years of operation NES has developed from a mostly visiting faculty teaching 25 students, into a mostly Russian faculty with a student body nearing 150. During this period we have graduated more than 300 students with MA’s in modern economics. We have developed a research center that undertakes more than ten research projects annually, and an outreach center that brings modern economics throughout Russia and beyond. NES had been recognized in Russia and in the West as a Center of Excellence in introducing Modern Economics to Russia. It is a glowing example of what a joint Western-Russian independent effort can accomplish in contributing to the process of transition; by building the institutional base for a market economy and contributing to the development of civil society.

All this couldn’t have been done without the guidance offered by an International Advisory Board of leading academic Economists from both the West and Russia, and a growing body of alumni. It couldn’t have been accomplished without the dedicated financial support offered by leading Western Foundations: The Soros, Ford, MacArthur, and Eurasia Foundations, and the World Bank and others. Together we have navigated the stormy waters of transition and have not only survived but thrived in the new Russia. This is an accomplishment that deserves celebration.

The 10^th anniversary events will reflect the achievements of NES in scholarship, research and outreach, and the recognition it has received for its contribution to Russia and in joining the global economic community. It will express the deep gratitude of NES to all the teachers, local and visiting, students and graduates of NES, outreach partners, members of the IAB and RAB, the supporting foundations and their dedicated members and the Russian economic leadership. And it will be a chance to dedicate ourselves to the next ten years of NES. The next ten years will see even more exciting developments as the new faculty of NES takes on the leadership of this institution, under the guidance of our Russian Advisory Board made of leading reform economists and leaders of the emerging market in Russia

A two and a half days academic conference, December 19-21. “CEFIR, SITE, Davidson Institute, EERC and NES celebrate together ten years of NES”. This will be an academic conference devoted to “the state of economics and of transition”. Already a number of leading economists from around the World and Russia have committed to present papers, and they will be joined by papers offered by members of the NES global community as defined above. The above-mentioned institutions, with a long history of cooperation with NES have agreed to join in the organization and financing of the conference. NES is very thankful to them. Barry Ickes is the chair of the conference committee.

Ten Years of NES: A ceremony and dinner, December 20, 8 pm. An evening devoted to the presentation of the NES experience and achievements and its future mission and to greetings by supporters and beneficiaries. By special invitation ONLY.
