A Brief Introduction to the New Economic School The
New Economic School, an independent graduate school of economics in Moscow, was
established in 1992 as a partnership of the Central Economic Mathematics Institute
of the Russian Academy of Sciences (CEMI), and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem,
along with a group of Western economic professors. NES was created to introduce
modern economics into Russia as a critical part of the transition to a market
economy. The School offers a two-year graduate level program in economics, similar
to programs in the top Western institutions. Through its Research Center, it trains
students and staff in modern research methods and apply economic analysis to questions
of transition and the Russian economy. Through its Outreach Center NES brings
modern economics training to economists outside of Moscow. The mission of NES
is to train a new generation of economists for Russia; to create a resident Russian
faculty of economics; and to integrate Russian economics profession into the world
community.
