Career Development Center

Ward Howell Seminar, 02/02/2009

The NES Career Development Center was established in January 2008. The main objective of the CDC is to help NES students and alumni to succeed in the career.

The crisis has hit the NES graduates’ job market. Employers are changing their recruitment policies, hiring freezes have been imposed and internships are being eliminated. The NES Career Development Center has been assisting students and alumni with job placement, career growth and personal development in this difficult environment.

CDC has built productive partnerships with the leading Russian and international companies, financial and consulting firms and representatives of the public sector. In 2008-09 academic year, 23 presentations were made at NES by such companies as JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, McKinsey, VTB Capital, Bain & Company, BCG and Troika Dialog. Some of these meetings took the form of practical exercises, training and seminars. NES students participated in a business casestudy championship sponsored by A. T. Kearney. They attended a training session for effective communication hosted by KPMG and a seminar on analysis of the job market by Ward Howell. American Appraisal delivered a master class on the appraisal business. Career development events such as interactive seminars with HR specialists from major companies on resume writing and interviewing, master classes on career planning with Ekaterina Shubert (Future Today) and interactive sessions on career development with Ekaterina Rudelson (Egon Zehnder) were a great success.

The other important CDC activity is the NES Alumni Professional Development Club. Alumni working in consulting, banking, real sector, government and academia — as well as those continuing their studies at PhD programs in universities abroad, come to the Professional Development Club to socialize and share their professional and life experiences. In 2008-09 academic year, the Club held 14 meetings with the School’s alumni.

On April 27, 2009, NES held a round table meeting with our leading employers to discuss strategic collaboration between business and the New Economic School. The round table brought together thirty-four representatives of 20 companies that are the long-term part partners of NES. Among the topics discussed were job placement for NES graduates and developing the skills necessary to start a career.

NES students and alumni receive up-to-date information on the job market during the academic year, including strategies for job placement in the current market. Regular electronic announcements are distributed within the School with recruitment news and interesting job opportunities. These are also available in the NES website’s Careers section in Russian.
